Classic car departments serve to reinforce a brand’s commitment to its history and roots. It can substantially enhance client loyalty and serves as an effective focus for marketing campaigns.  A well imagined department can reduce seasonality and build profits in service sales and parts. Classic cars are unique and margins can be more easily maintained.

Most existing dealership staff do not have any direct connection with Classic cars. In order to dominate this market and compete with Independent shops, Sales, Service and Parts departments will require a dedicated team with a different approach. 

Every Classic car is unique and therefore sales are based more on condition and provenance. It is critical the car be bought at a price that reflects the reconditioning necessary to ready it for sale. If this is done correctly, all departments and the client will benefit. A well organized Classic car department can benefits ownership by managing inventory with the goal of utilizing slower periods in the service department to create product for the sales department. 

Used Car departments can be extremely profitable yet expose ownership to the possibility of massive inventory value loss and customer complaints. Reconfiguring the department can distribute decisions internally, increase customer satisfaction and profits. 

Once a Corporate ethos and target is agreed upon, staff can be trained to present their products effectively  with greater confidence and retaining more margin.

I agree with the maxim “Sales sells the first car, and Service sells the next”. 
By updating a few techniques Service Advisors can increase their sales per RO while achieving a higher CSI. 

Many dealerships depend on their management to  resolve client conflicts. This puts their reputation at risk and often times though spending money on resolving the issue the client is lost.

Experience with Brands and Independents

My introduction to the car business in the 1970's found an industry which had been unchanged for decades. It was clear to me that a focus on strong ethics and exceptional customer service would bring long term growth. The bar was so low in those days even washing their cars after service, or follow up phone calls was enough to stand out from the crowd and drive loyalty. Independent Shops have a number of advantages. These include the ability to criticize products or pricing provided by authorized dealers, and quite often supply a stronger one on one experience for the client. Once a client is lost to an Independent shop they are difficult to recapture.

If a dealership wishes to expand their business beyond the 'New Car Cycle', and has the headroom to do so, there are strategies that can be implemented to achieve success in post warranty sales and service.
