My introduction to the car business in the 1970's found an industry which had been unchanged for decades. It was clear to me that a focus on strong ethics and exceptional customer service would bring long term growth.
The bar was so low in those days even washing their cars after service, or follow up phone calls was enough to stand out from the crowd and drive loyalty.
Independent Shops have a number of advantages. These include the ability to criticize products or pricing provided by authorized dealers, and quite often supply a stronger one on one experience for the client. Once a client is lost to an Independent shop they are difficult to recapture.
If a dealership wishes to expand their business beyond the 'New Car Cycle', and has the headroom to do so, there are strategies that can be implemented to achieve success in post warranty sales and service.
